“You must never feel badly about making mistakes ... as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons.” ―

PE and Sport

At Parkfield Community School, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in developing healthy, confident and resilient children. Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all children to enjoy being active, develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity, and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

We provide a broad, balanced and inclusive PE curriculum that develops children's physical competence, confidence and teamwork skills. Through high-quality teaching, children are given opportunities to improve their agility, balance, coordination and fitness while learning the values of determination, respect, resilience and sportsmanship. Our lessons are active, engaging and child-centred, ensuring that all children can experience success and make progress regardless of their starting point.

At Parkfield, we recognise that physical activity extends far beyond curriculum PE lessons. Every year group benefits from a wide range of enrichment opportunities, allowing children to experience different sports, activities and competitive events throughout their time at school. These opportunities help children discover new interests, develop leadership skills and build confidence in a variety of sporting contexts.

Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) provides children with daily opportunities to be active, creative and adventurous during playtimes, supporting many of the skills developed within the PE curriculum. Children enhance their balance, coordination, agility, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills through a wide range of play experiences, including den building, creative play, loose parts activities and active games. By connecting PE, school sport and OPAL, we ensure that children are physically active throughout the school day, helping them to develop confidence, resilience, independence and a lifelong enjoyment of movement. This holistic approach enables every child to experience the physical, social and emotional benefits of an active lifestyle, regardless of their sporting ability or interests. See our OPAL provision here: https://www.parkfield.excelsiormat.org/our-learning/opal/

We are extremely proud to have achieved the School Games Platinum Award, recognising our long-standing commitment to providing high-quality physical education, school sport and opportunities for competitive participation. This prestigious award reflects the inclusive sporting culture that exists throughout our school and our dedication to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to be active and represent Parkfield.

Inclusivity is at the heart of our PE provision. We actively participate in SEND Panathlon events, providing children with additional needs and disabilities the opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork and sporting achievement in a supportive environment. Alongside this, children regularly take part in a variety of inter-school and intra-school competitions and festivals, including football, cricket, athletics, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) and sports leadership events. These experiences help children develop character, resilience and a sense of pride in representing their school.

Through our PE curriculum and wider sporting opportunities, we aim to develop children who are physically literate, confident in their abilities and motivated to lead active, healthy lives both now and in the future. Mr Dan Dowson (Assistant Headteacher) and Mr James Latham (Excelsior MAT PE Coordinator) continue to develop and enhance the provision of PE, school sport and physical activity at Parkfield Community School. Through regular collaboration, curriculum review and strategic planning, children benefit from a high-quality, inclusive and ambitious PE programme, alongside a wide range of competitive, enrichment and leadership opportunities. This shared vision helps ensure that every child can develop confidence, enjoy being active and achieve their full potential in sport and physical activity.
